 History

In 1895, John H. Love embarked in the undertaking business in connection with a general store on Hoagland Blackstub Road, north of Route 88, at West Mecca. Looking to expand in 1910, Love purchased the undertaking and furniture business of James Bradord, located on West Main Street in Cortland which had been established in 1882.

This Cortland funeral home's name was changed to Love and Son Funeral Directors and continued under the name until 1972.

Love retired from the undertaking line in 1926 when the funeral department was assumed by his son, Neal T. Love. John continued operating the furniture store.

The funeral home was relocated sometime in the 1920s to its present location at 164 North High St. The name was changed to Shafer-Winans and Love Funeral Home in the fall of 1972 when the business was purchased from Neal Love's son-in-law Gerald Conley by two Cortland men - Donald L. Winans and James D. Shafer.

The Shafer-Winans Chapel of Lane Funeral Homes is still located in the E.B. Caldwell family home (circa 1870) that was probably built by his father, James Caldwell, who brought hundreds of head of cattle on cattle drives from southern Ohio to the Western Reserve.

Lane Funeral Homes, Inc. acquisition of Shafer-Winans Chapel in 2005 is proof of their dedication to the community. They continue to add new services to meet the changing times while still offering the same personalized services and products.
