There will be a memorial service 1 PM Saturday January 31, 2009 at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel for Albert L. Martin who passed away Friday morning at his home. Al was born May 4, 1918 in Youngstown a son of the late Louis A and Elizabeth (Shaffer) Martin. In high school, Al was a member of the first Youngstown All City Football Team playing end, and won the Prince of Peace Speech Contest in 1935. Al then served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. During WWII, he was stationed on the USS John Hancock and the USS Brahama-Richard. While serving during the Korean Conflict, Al was stationed in Hawaii, but traveled through the South Pacific. Al retired after 27 years at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Operations. After retirement he was the district manager for Lab Corp of America. He is survived by his wife the former Gertrude Filbert, whom he married October 3, 1977; two children: Fred L. (Brenda) Martin of Boardman, and Raymond P. Martin of Palm Springs, CA; two sisters: Lucille Van Allen of Boardman, and Annabel (Jesse) Terry of Pasadena, CA; two grandchildren: Patrick L. Martin of Boardman, and Caroline Untch of Poland; and two great granddaughters. Besides his parents, Al is preceded in death by two brothers Donald and Edward Martin, and one sister Elizabeth Poplin. The family would like to thank all the friends, relatives, and neighbors for all of their help, and would also like to thank Hospice of the Valley for all of their compassion and care to Al. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley , 5190 Market St. Boardman, OH 44512 in Al's name. Friends may call from 12 PM until 1 PM Saturday at the funeral home prior to the services.
