Albert Pompeo Sr, 79, of Howland Twp. died at 7:59 PM Thursday Jan. 27, 2011 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital following a six month illness. He was born Sept.12, 1931 in Youngstown the son of Salvatore and Angeline (Simone) Pompeo. A lifetime area resident, Al was a 1949 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and attended the Youngstown Business College for 2 years. He served in the US Army as a medic during the Korean War with the 1666th Medical Detachment of the 28th Artillery Division. He attained the rank of corporal and received the Army Occupation of Germany medal and the National Defense Service medal. Al was employed for over 30 years by VanHuffel Tube Corp. retiring as traffic manager. He also worked as controller for JARO Trucking and was a self-employed tax preparer for many years. He was a member of St. James Church where he served as usher and Council 4484 of the Knights of Columbus. He also belonged to the Youngstown Traffic Club, the Trumbull Traffic Club, the Delta Nu Traffic Club, and he was a democratic precinct committeeman. Al was an avid sports fan and formerly was a Howland Athletic Club and Youngstown Class B Baseball coach. He loved to golf and bowl and cheer on his favorite teams; the Browns, the Indians, the Buckeyes, and the Penguins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Deborah in 2010, and a brother Ralph. A devoted family man, he will be deeply missed by his wife of 58 years Loretta (Santfant) whom he married Oct. 18, 1952, and 4 children; Albert "Albie" (Kim) Jr. of Macedonia, Randy (Jan) of Warren, Rick (Cheri) of Cortland and Stephanie Pompeo of Streetsboro. Al also leaves 8 grandchildren; Brandy and fianc Ryan Weaver, Randy Jr. and wife Amanda, Nicholas, Nicole, Samantha, Joshua, Rachel, Albert III, a great grandson Noah Murry, 2 sisters Connie Hill, Angie Ressler, a brother Sam (Frances) all of California and numerous nieces and nephews. The Rev. Charles Crumbley will conduct a funeral service 1:30 PM Monday Jan. 31, 2011 at Roberts-Clark Chapel where friends will be received from 4-7PM Sunday. Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery where military honors will be observed by the Trumbull County Honor Guard.
