CANFIELD- Funeral services will be held 11 Am Sat. in Christ Church Presbyterian for Amil J. Mentges age 85 of 4339 Timberbrook Dr. who died late Sunday eve. at North Side Hospital. Amil was born Oct. 7, 1918 in Youngstown and was the son of Emil and Lillian (Schmaltz) Mentges. He retired from L.T.V. Steel in 1980 where he had been a machinist and die maker. He was a member of Christ Church Presbyterian, Argus lodge #545 F&AM, Saxon Club, member of the P.O.W. Steel Valley Chapter #13, National American Ex-Prisoners of War Assoc., A.A.R. P., was a graduate of Chaney High School where he played football, received his 2 year degree in drafting from Youngstown College and swam in the Arthritic Club at the Ursuline Mother House. He had served in the Army during WWII as a Corporal in the 7th Infantry Division as a machine gunner. He was captured in Colmar, France and became a P.O.W.. Amil received the Purple Heart, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the European-African Middle East Service Medal Amil leaves his wife Lois (Farmer) Mentges whom he married Jan. 15, 1944. He also leaves a daughter Carol Mentges of Conneaut, OH, two sons Thomas (Barbara) Mentges of Poland, David (Sharon) Mentges of Newark, OH, two sisters Kathryn Conroy and Patricia Moylan both of Austintown, and three grandchildren, Brian, Eric and Jennifer Mentges. Friends may call at the Lane Funeral Home-Austintown Chapel from 4-7 PM Friday and 1 hour prior to service at the church on Saturday. The Steel Valley Chapter of P.O.W.’s will hold a service Friday evening. Interment will be made a Green Haven Cemetery following the church service. The family requests that material contributions be made to the church or the organization of your choice.
