YOUNGSTOWN-Services will begin at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2011 with closing prayers to be recited at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel and continue with a Mass of Christian Burial to be said at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthias Church with Msgr. Peter M. Polando officiating for Anthony Robert Shimek, 92, who passed away on Thursday, September 01, 2011 at 4:00 a.m. at Clare Bridge Cottage in Austintown. Mr. Shimek was born on January 21, 1919 in Benwood, West Virginia the son of the late Michael and Esther (Kolar) Shimek. Mr. Shimek was a roll grinder for Republic Steel in Youngstown for 40 years retiring in 1982. A Veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Shimek served his country during World War II in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and was honorably discharged on October 30, 1945. An active and long time faithful member of St. Matthias Church in Youngstown, Mr. Shimek was a member of JEDNOTA Catholic Slovak Union, a former member of the VFW and enjoyed golfing and bowling. Mr. Shimek is survived by a son Robert (Jeannie) Shimek of Austintown; two sisters Matilda Stipcic of Poland and Dolores Scarnecchia of Boardman; two grandchildren Anthony (Bernadette) Shimek of Canfield and Kimberly (Robert) Groppe of Hudson and three great grandchildren Sathita Shimek and Emma and Ethan Groppe. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 from 5 until 7 p.m. in the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel, where the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild of St. Matthias Church will hold a prayer service at 4:45 p.m. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery with full military honors. As a sign of condolence the family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to either the Restoration Fund at St. Matthias Church, 915 Cornell St. Youngstown, Ohio 44502 or to Southern Care Hospice, 5401 Ashley Circle Ste. E, Austintown, Ohio 44515.
