Betty Goddard

BOARDMAN- Private services were held for Betty Goddard, 94 of Boardman who died Saturday morning at Hampton Woods Nursing Center, Poland.. Betty was born July 19, 1919 in Nelson, Wales , a daughter of the late Edward F. Brown and Dorothy Baker Padfield Brown Sullivan. Betty came to the Youngstown area in 1926 and became a United States citizen at the age of 18 after graduating from Chaney High School in 1937. She graduated from Youngstown College in 1941 and after graduation taught Business Education at Cortland High School until 1943 when she married her husband, William M. Goddard, Jr. on February 14, 1943. She joined her husband at Wright Patterson Field while he was Captain in the Army. After his release from the service they returned to Youngstown and moved to Boardman. Betty became secretary to the AV department at Boardman High School. After relinquishing this position she became active in the Boardman PTA serving as President for the elementary, middle and high school. Betty was also active in the Student Foreign Exchange Program, placing each student in area homes. Betty was an active member of the Boardman Swim Club and the Ladies' Jaycees, a member and treasurer of the Calon Lon Welsh Club and a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She leaves her children, a daughter, Barbara (Tom Jr.) Simpers of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and a son, James M. (Sandra L. ) Goddard of Boardman and 6 grandchildren. Besides her parents and her husband, William who preceded her in death on February 15, 2006, she was preceded in death by a son, William E. Goddard and a brother, Ronald A. Brown. The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to: Shepherd of the Valley Home Health Services, 5525 Silica Rd., Austintown, OH 44515. There were no calling hours. Arrangements were entrusted to Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel.
