Catherine Bayer

April 4, 1918 — July 15, 2009

Catherine Bayer 91 of Austinwoods Nursing Center, passed away on Wednesday night following a long struggle with Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Catherine was born April 4, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Stanley Irvin and Anna Helen (Nicpon) Woodford. Mr. Woodford passed away in 1920, after which Catherine’s Mother married Leo Sattler. Catherine was married to Lloyd “Buggsy” Bayer on December 30, 1951, who preceded her in death on January 3, 2000. She moved to Santa Monica, California, with the B.F. Williams Tie Company from Youngstown around 1941. After a short time she was hired as a Nanny for the children of Mr. & Mrs. Delmer Daves, a movie writer and director, until the children became of age. After which her Sister, Mary Louise, helped her find work as a Long-Distance Operator in the Hollywood, California, Exchange. They both transferred home to the Youngstown Exchange in 1951. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austintown, where she was asked to form a “Alter Guild” to care for the Sanctuary. She was a member of SOAR, Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees and the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 301, where she once served as Chaplin. Catherine and Lloyd were one of the United States Steel families that formed the Waggin Wheels Travel Trailer Club in 1961. Together they also assisted in forming the Cornersburg Happy Seniors, and after that Chapter 4339 of the A.A.R.P. Catherine is survived by her son Lloyd, Jr., who married Elouise McGuckin (Miller), a grand-daughter Amy McGuckin, two sisters Margaret Lukas and Mary Louise Sattler, a brother Robert Sattler, a nephew Stephen Lukas and many other beloved cousins, nephews and nieces. She was also preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, two children Phillip Allen and Cynthia Kay, a grand-son Aaron McGuckin, a sister Genevieve Woodford, a brother Leo Sattler and a brother-in-law Stephen Lukas. Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm at Lane Funeral Home, 5797 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, and from 10 to 11 am Wednesday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Rd., with the funeral service to follow. The burial will be at Lake Park Cemetery. A special thank you to the staff at Austinwoods Nursing Center, Rev.
