Charles Frederick Huxsaw

July 28, 1946 — March 4, 2017

Charles F. Huxsaw, born on July 28, 1946, died on March 4, 2017 after a prolonged illness. He was the son of Howard and Mary (Lewis) Huxsaw, and grew up in Canfield, Ohio. Charles, known as "Charlie" by family and friends, was a graduate of Canfield High School. He went on to attend the College of William & Mary, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and was a founding member of the Zeta Upsilon chapter of Sigma Chi. Following college, he enjoyed teaching and coaching basketball in the Albemarle County Schools in Virginia. He later attended the University of Virginia where he earned his Master's Degree in Government and his law degree. Charles was a member of the Virginia State Bar and had a distinguished career in legal publishing, including as Vice President of Publishing at Butterworth Legal Publishers in Massachusetts. He was also a well-published author of materials related to the practice of law. Charles' lifelong interests were in history and politics. He served for a time as Chair of the Charlottesville City Democratic Committee, leading the successful election campaigns of the first black person and the first woman to serve as Charlottesville City Councilors. After his retirement, he continued to pursue publishing and writing. In researching his genealogical roots, he discovered an unpublished manuscript written in 1858 by Elisha Whittlesey, a distinguished citizen and lawyer from Canfield. Planning to publish it as the first offering of his company, Canfield Publishing, LLC, Charles was bringing that writing up to date and annotating the author's original words. Charles is remembered with love by his wife, Susan Sjostrom; children, Carey (Michael) Sclafani, Sarah (Adeilton) Sjostrom, Andrew (Kara) Huxsaw, Jeffrey Huxsaw, and Alec Huxsaw; and grandchildren, Maria Isabella, Lilia Guiliana, and Michael Charles. Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 9th from 11 AM to 1 PM at Lane Family Funeral Home's Canfield Chapel, 65 N. Broad Street in Canfield. Funeral services will follow calling hours, Thursday at 1 PM. Interment will take place at Canfield Village East Cemetery. Friends may send condolences to www.lanefuneralhomes.com.
