Charles R Nochta, Sr., age 89 of Cortland, died at 12:01 p.m. Monday, November 29, 2010, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. He was born April 28, 1921 in Brownsville, Pa. the son of the late Paul and Irma Horvath Nochta. After high school, Charles served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was wounded at Anzio Beach, Italy and received the purple heart and later, during President Carter's administration, was awarded the bronze star. Charles retired in 1981 as a line foreman from G.E. Trumbull Lamp, where he worked for 34 years. He was a member of Old Erie Lodge No. 3 F&AM for over 50 years, a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and a member of the DAV. Charles is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janis Amos Nochta, whom he married October 1, 1945; one daughter, Claudia J. (Gene) Balog of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Charles R. (Linda) Nochta Jr. of Cortland and Todd A. (Susan) Nochta of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Bryan Balog, Kristen (Brian) West and Laura Nochta and two great granddaughters, Addison and Avery West. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, December 3, 2010 at Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland, with Rev. Carl Kish officiating. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday and Old Erie Masonic Lodge will conduct services at 4:45 p.m. Burial will be at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna, where military honors will be observed.
