DR. DEFOREST WAYNE 'WOODY' METCALF, SR. Fort Myers, FL-- A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 22nd at the Village Church, Shell Point, in Ft. Myers for Dr. DeForest Wayne "Woody" Metcalf, Sr., 92, formerly of Boardman, who died Tuesday August 28th in Ft. Myers. Dr. Metcalf was born July 13, 1920 in Ashtabula, a son of Max M. and Emma Louisa Anderson Metcalf. He was a graduate of Ashtabula High School and Wheaton College in Chicago. Woody received his medical degree at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army at Wright Patterson Army Hospital in Dayton. Woody married his high school sweetheart, Mildred E. "Millie" Newman in 1943. They settled in Youngstown in 1949 where Woody co-founded Associates in Anesthesiology and practiced anesthesia at the Youngstown Hospital Association for nearly 40 years. For several of those years he served as head of the Anesthesia Dept. and Chief of Staff of the Hospital. He and Millie were very active members of First Covenant Church in Boardman for their entire life in Youngstown. Woody served in many capacities including Chairman of the church. He retired to Ft. Myers in 1985 where he enjoyed a "second" career in real estate for several years. In 1995 the Metcalfs moved into Shell Point Village where Woody was very active in the "woodshop", ECHO (Educational Concerns For Hunger Organization), the Ministry Team, and the Bill Glass Prison Ministry. Woody is survived by his wife of 69 years, Millie, whom he married December 18, 1943; his daughter, Karen (David) Courtney of Lomita, CA; his son, DeForest "Woody" Jr. (Ruth) of Columbus, GA; his brother, Rev. Melbourne J. "Mel" Metcalf, a former missionary in Tokyo, Japan, who now lives in Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His sister, June E. Rosenquist died December 26, 2001. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed in Woody's name to: Bill Glass, Champions For Life, P.O.
