Deyarman Wallace

A memorial service will be held at a later date for DeYarman Wallace, formerly of Canfield who passed away on Saturday May 31st at Salem Community Hospital. Mr. Wallace was born April 26, 1912 in Struthers, the son of Roy M. and Mabel Clare (DeYarman) Wallace. He lived in Canfield with his wife Marjorie L. Wallace before moving to Copeland Oaks in 1985. Mr. Wallace was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, receiving a degree of Chemical Engineering and was a member of Phi Kappa Tau-Rho Chapter. He worked for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company for 38 years where he was a pioneer in the field of Environmental Control. In 1965, he received the “F.H. Waring Award” for outstanding achievement in the field of industrial waste control. Under Stewart Udall, Secretary of the Interior, he was named to an advisory committee of “Industrial Water Supplies Committee.” He published a number of articles in the “Iron Age” on the control of industrial wastewaters. He was the company representative on the Ohio River Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) and worked with the Ohio E.P.A. to clean up the Mahoning River. He received recognition in the field of Industrial Hygiene from the American Iron and Steel institute. He was certified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to check coalmine atmospheres for exposure to “black-lung” disease. He was recognized in the field of air pollution by establishing a mobile laboratory to monitor the community atmosphere for emissions from industrial operations 24 hours a day. He also worked in the field of Occupational Safety and Health for exposure in industrial operations to unhealthy working conditions. He was also granted several patents on galvanizing operations. Mr. Wallace was the chairman of numerous committees in the American Iron and Steel Institute. He was active in community affairs, the Presbyterian Church, youth groups, Boy Scouts, and Ohio Porcelain Art teachers. Upon his retirement, he taught porcelain art for ten years and continued to paint porcelain china during his retirement. DeYarman leaves a son Robert D. Wallace of Chesnee, S.C. and two grandchildren. His wife the former Marjorie Hutton, whom he married in 1945, passed away in 1992. A daughter Sue L. Smiley also preceded him in death in 1988. The family request that memorial contributions be sent to The Copeland Oaks Life Care Fund at 800 South 15th St. Sebring, OH 44672-2042
