DONALD E. WHITACRE, SR. BERLIN CENTER-There will be Services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lockwood United Methodist Church for Donald E. Whitacre, Sr., 89, who died Saturday morning at Northside Medical Center. He was born July16, 1923 in Youngstown, a son of Steven Baldwin and Mary Nalley Whitacre. Don was an Erector Fitter with United Engineering, retiring in 1985. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1954. During that time, he was in the European Theater of Operation , including the Battle of the Bulge and then stationed in Okinawa and finally as a Staff Sergeant with the Military Police in Germany. Don was a member of the church, where he was on the board of trustees and served as head usher for many years. He was a member of the Northeast Ohio Camero Car Club and owned a 1968 Chevrolet Camero that he was very proud of and took to many car shows. Don was also a member of the Ohio King Midget Club, the American Legion-Post No. 737 and an avid bowler. Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Margaret L. Bailey, whom he married June1, 1946; his son, David M. Whitacre of Silver Spring, MD; many nieces and nephews, including, Fred Bailey, Jr., Steve Whitacre, Donny Whitacre and his brother Fred Whitacre, Laurie Klotz and Barb Whitacre; many gr. nieces and nephews and gr. gr. nieces and nephews and a special friend and caretaker, Curt Kirtley. Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his sons, Donald E., Jr. and Skipper; his brothers, James, Raymond, Steve, Clarence "Zeke", John Paul, Mickey and Woodrow and his sisters, Mildred Murphy, Ruth Morrison and Mary Mitchell. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Lane Family Funeral Homes-Canfield Chapel and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, prior to the Service at the church.
