Donald G. Smith

Donald G. Smith, age 68, of Champion Township, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday morning, December 18, 2008, at his home. He was born March 30, 1940 in Warren the son of the late Glenn and Ellen (Davis) Smith. He was a lifetime Trumbull county resident. Don was a 1959 graduate of Chalker High School in Southington. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Don retired in 1994 from General Motors-Lordstown quality control department, where he worked 28 years. Don was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where he volunteered with the maintenance of the church. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 540 in Cortland, where he had served with the Honor Guard. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed gardening, landscaping, traveling to Myrtle Beach and birdwatching. He was a NASCAR fan and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He also loved his cat, Suzie. His wife of 38 years, Gwenn D. Kolley Smith, whom he married October 3, 1970, died September 21, 2008. One son, Gregory A. Smith preceded him in death in 1992. He is survived by two daughters, Kristine (Brian) Placer and Lisa (Jason) Richmond both of Champion Twp.; four grandchildren, Shane Smith, Julianne Placer, Haley Coe and Tyler Richmond; one brother, Richard L. (Beverly) Smith of Southington and several nieces and nephews. Don will also be missed by his neighbors, special friends and his fishing buddies. Arrangements are being handled by Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel in Warren, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday. Calling hours will also be one hour prior to the funeral service at Otterbein United Methodist Church at 12:30 pm Monday, December 22, 2008, with Pastor Patricia Christ officiating. Burial will be at Champion Twp. Cemetery in Champion. Memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Light Hospice, 25 South Main St., Munroe Falls, OH 44262.
