Funeral services will be held at 10am Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel for Donald L. Bowen, 81, who died early Friday evening at Briarfield Manor Nursing Home in Austintown. He was born September 19, 1927 in Niles, a son of Jabe and Grace (Dunbar) Bowen, and he resided in this area all of his life. He was a 1946 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a Bandsman Trumpeter. After his military service he worked as an independent insurance agent and was owner/operator of Bowen Insurance Agency of Niles. He was a former member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Niles and was a current member of the Ellsworth Presbyterian Church. He was a longtime member of the Niles Masons and the Niles Rotary where he served as past president from 1970-71. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Diehl Lake in Berlin Center where he stocked the lake with game fish. He married the former Betty M. Powell on November 15, 1947, and she preceded him in death January 4, 2007. He is survived by five children; Janet (Robert) Miller of McDonald; Julia (Bill) Marquard of North Olmstead; Gale (Steve) Brogley of Dayton; Lee (Jenny) Bowen of Elyria; and Beth (Kurt Smith) Bowen of Concord, NH. He also leaves fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Walter Bowen; and three sisters; Florence McGarry, Eleanor Crone; and Margaret Calhoun. Friends may call from 5-8pm Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of The Valley.
