Donald M. "Mayor" Jones, age 85, of Cortland, died suddenly on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at his residence. He was born on December 24, 1926, in Cortland, a son of the late Harold T. Jones and the late May P. Boger Jones. Don was president of the Cortland High School graduating class of 1944 and served in the United States Army Air Core during WWII receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1947. He worked many different jobs throughout his career but he retired from the County Engineers Office as Chief Bridge inspector and draftsman in 1987. Don was very involved in the Cortland community, having served as past district governor and past president of the Cortland Lions Club where he was a lifetime member and past president of the Cortland Street Fair Board. He was a member of the Cortland Christian Church where he served a Deacon, the Cortland Masonic Lodge, the American Legion Post #540 where he was a lifetime member andserved as past Post Commander with over 50 years of service, Cortland F & AM #529- OES and the Ali Babba Grotto- Clown Unit. Don also served his community as a volunteer on the East Bazetta Fire Dept. and served in the Cortland Volunteer Fireman's Association where he was a lifetime member. He was past president of the Cortland Alumni, served as Cortland Mayor for 12 years and served as City Councilman for 10 years. His first wife, Mildred Baltich Jones, whom he married on September 16, 1950, preceded him in death on September 15, 1982. Don is survived by his loving companion, Sharon Hopkins; a daughter, Linda (Hector) Andrade of North Fort Myers, FL and his twin sons, Ronald (Gayle) of Cortland and Donald of North Fort Myers, FL, sister, Edith Henretty of North Fort Myers, FL. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren, Jessie Jones, Kayce (Josh) Arnal and Thomas (Kirsten) Hott and 2 great grandchildren, Damian Hott and Ellie Mae Arnal. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Allen and a grandson, Nicholas Todd Jones. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 5PM 7PM at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 18, 2012 with Masonic services beginning at 11AM at the funeral home where the family will again receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.
