Dora Irene Mealy Smith, age 87, formerly of Cortland, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the Autumn Hills Nursing Centre in Niles. She was born on September 13, 1924 in Girard, a daughter of the late Smith Joseph and the late Marion Reinhart Mealy. Dora was a 1942 graduate of Howland High School and retired from the Trumbull County Human Service on January 31, 1989. She was a devoted member of the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church and had served as both a Girl Scout and 4-H leader for many years. She was also a life member of the Order of the Amaranth of Warren Court #24 and the Eastern Star, Opal Chapter #181. Dora was a member of many clubs, including the Cross Trailers, Sand Lake Promenaders, Ramblin Squares and the National Square Dancers and Campers Association. Dora enjoyed square dancing and traveling with her husband, as well as spending time with her family. Her husband, Carl Albert Smith, whom she married on August 3, 1946, preceded her in death on June 21, 1995. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a son, Donald Lee (Betty Jean) Smith of Amarillo, TX and a daughter, Carla Smith of Canton, a brother, Warren (Lois) Mealy of Jamestown, PA, four sisters, Henrietta (Marion) Nims of Colebrook, OH, Anna May (Richard) Ferguson of Sharpsville, PA, Judith Ilene (Robert) Johnson of Sparta, IL and Linda Kay (Terry) Swauger of Cortland and a sister in-law, Violet Melay of Greenville, PA. Also surviving are five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Dora was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorca Rose Smith and two brothers, Gerry and Eden Melay. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 2PM 3:45PM at the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church. Eastern Star services will be held at 3:45PM Wednesday followed by a funeral services at 4PM at the church. Burial will be in the Rocky Glen Cemetery in Adamsville, PA In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church, 6262 Youngstown-Kingsville Rd., Farmdale, OH 44417.
