Douglas L Shively

Douglas L. Shively, age 72, of Champion Township died Saturday afternoon, September 13, 2008, of sudden heart failure on his way home after working on his airplane. He was born April 20, 1936 in Berlin Center the son of the late Virgil L. and Virginia M. (Florence) Shively. He had been a Trumbull county resident most of his life. Doug was a 1954 graduate of Champion High School and attended Youngstown College. He served in the U.S. Navy reserves from 1954-1962. Doug worked for 43 years as a pipefitter and HVAC technician through the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. He retired in 1997. After serving his apprenticeship, he also was an instructor in the apprenticeship school of plumbers and pipefitters. Doug was a lifetime active member of the Champion Presbyterian Church, where he had served on session and trustee boards. He was past master and member for over 25 years of the Cortland Masonic Lodge No. 529. For over 35 years, he belonged to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and had homebuilt his own airplane. Doug held a private pilots license and was a Red Cross blood donor, donating over 5 gallons. Doug loved spending time with his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed his dogs, Annie and Angel. Doug is survived by his wife, Joan M. Pettit Shively, whom he married June 10, 1966; three sons, Douglas Keith Shively of Columbus, Jeffrey L. (Diane) Shively of Phoenix and Frank L. (Courtney) Shively of Warren; four grandchildren, Tyler Nimmagadda, Mikayla Shively and Preston and Megan Shively; two brothers, Christopher L. of Georgetown, PA and Eric L. of West Palm Beach, Fla. and one sister, Stephanie D. Nathan of Ramrod Key, Fla. One daughter, Pamela Shively and one brother, Carl L. "Sam" Shively both preceded him in death. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Thursday, September 18, 2008 at the Champion Presbyterian Church, where the funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, with Pastor Richard Ferris officiating. Masonic services will be held that day at the church also. Material contributions may be made to the memorial fund at the church. Arrangements are by Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel in Warren.
