Elmer C. Gross Sr. age 88, of Cortland, died on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren from complications of a heart attack. He was born on June 5, 1923 in Barberton, OH., a son of the late Harry W. Gross and the late Ida M. McCaulley Gross. Elmer was a member of the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church and the Steelworkers of America. He had worked as a steel worker for Republic Steel for 36 years, retiring in 1981 and was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during WWII. He enjoyed woodworking, automotive mechanics, fishing and deer hunting. Mostly, Elmer enjoyed the visits from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His wife, Isabell Faye Hammond Gross, whom he married on June 5, 1947, preceded him in death on October 27, 1999. Elmer is survived by a son, Elmer C. "Butch" (Carol) Gross Jr. of Niles, two grandchildren, Stephen (Samantha) Gross of Wylie, TX and Christina (Frank) Ross of Akron, OH. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Isabella and Kayla Gross and Cayden Ross. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 from 10AM 11AM at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. Services will be held on Tuesday at 11AM at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Johnston Twp. Cemetery where the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard will render honors. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 475, Cortland, OH 44410.
