Elva Elizabeth Hopkins

Elva E. (Hadley) Hopkins, age 79, of Cortland, died at 5:24 pm Saturday, June 27, 2009, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren. She was born September 17, 1929 in Gustavus the daughter of the late John H. and Bessie B. Bassett Hadley. Elva was a lifetime Trumbull county resident. Elva was a 1947 graduate of Gustavus High School and graduated as a registered nurse in 1950 from the Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for over 30 years as a RN, working for many years for Dr. Thomas Berry in Kinsman and part time for Dr. Bipin Patel. Elva was an active member for 57 years at Cortland Christian Church, where she had served as church organist, was a member of the choir and the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was an active volunteer throughout the community. Elva was a founding member of LOAF in Cortland, served as treasurer of the CROP Walk, was a local organizer and past treasurer of the Cortland area unit of the Salvation Army, served on the Cortland Area Cares board and was treasurer during the formative years, served on the board of Warren Civic Music Association for over 50 years and had served on the Cortview board of directors. Elva was a member of several literary clubs, including the Lake Vista Book Club. She loved actively volunteering for the American Red Cross blood drives and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Lorin J. Hopkins, whom she married May 10, 1952; one daughter, Kim (Vernon) Stevens of Gustavus; one son, L. Thomas Hopkins of Wilmington, Delaware; a son-in-law, Thomas Nicolaus of Whittemore, Iowa; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Andrew Hopkins, Corey and Clayton Stevens and Karl Nicolaus; one great grandson, Brennan Fobes and two brothers, Herbert (Lavonne) Hadley of South Pasadena, Fla. and A. Dwight (Betty) Hadley of Gustavus. One daughter, Laurel Nicolaus preceded her in death. Two brothers, J. Leslie and Wayne Hadley have also preceded in death. The family will receive friends at the Cortland Christian Church from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday and from 10:30 to the 11:00 am funeral service at the church on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, with the Rev. Donald P. Barnes officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Bazetta Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cortland Christian Church, 153 Grove Drive, Cortland or to the Cortland Branch of the Trumbull County Public Library.
