Elwert A. Whiteside, age 94 of Cortland passed away at 12:17am Monday April 20, 2009 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Elwert was born in Hubbard on April 26, 1914, the son of the late Crawford and Mary Olive (Frow) Whiteside. Elwert served our country in the United States Army during WWII being honorable discharged in 1943. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1949 from Youngstown College. Elwert worked as the busing supervisor for Lakeview and Howland Local School Districts. He was a member of Cortland Christian Church. Elwert enjoyed bowling every Monday at Echo Lanes, he was an extensive traveler; was a member of the Masonic Lodge #295, Odd Fellows, and American Legion Post 540. He also enjoyed gardening and playing cards. He married his wife the former Grace Payne on May 17, 1942. Grace preceded him in death on September 4, 1984. Elwert is survived by his two children; John E. (Nancy) Whiteside of Yakima, Washington; Carol (Anthony) Schiavone of Vienna; grandchildren, Eric, Cathy, Chris, Jackie, and Sal; and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Grace and his siblings; Marvin Whiteside, and Roberta Snyder Funeral services will be 11am Thursday April 23, 2009 at Cortland Christian Church. The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday from 6-8pm at Shafer- Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. A Masonic Service will be held at 5:45pm.
