Erle R. Zimmerman

With a promise of a new life in Heaven, E. Robert Zimmerman, 90, joined his beloved wife Virginia with open arms on Thursday morning, April 1 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown. He was born June 9, 1919 in Columbiana, a son of Erle C. and Agnes (Lower) Zimmerman, and he resided in the Akron area for most of his life before coming to Canfield. He attended Oberlin College and Kent State University. He was a member of Unity Church Centre in Girard. He worked as administrative assistant to a vice president at the Firestone Rubber Company for 43 years before retiring in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Medical Corps during WW II where he received two battle stars for his service. He also received other awards for jewelry design and amateur artistry. He married the former Julia "Virginia" Evans May 16, 1942 and she preceded him in death February 6, 2003. He is survived by a son, John E. (Kathleen) Zimmerman of Canfield; a brother, John H. (LaVonne) Zimmerman of Hilton Head, SC; a sister, Susan Zimmerman of Cleveland; a granddaughter, Jill C. (Michael) Placco of Milford, MI; a grandson, Matthew J. Zimmerman of Canfield; and a great grandson, John Michael Placco. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by a son, E. Robert Zimmerman, Jr. Private funeral services were held on Monday, April 5th, at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel with the Rev. Richard Schumacher officiating. Should friends so desire memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
