NEW MIDDLETOWN- A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for the life of Ernest J. Forgac Sr, on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Austintown with Fr. Gregory Fedor officiating, preceded by closing prayers to be recited at 9:45 a.m. in the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel, who died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boardman. Ernest was the third child and only son born to John and Christina Uhran Forgac on March 3, 1929, in Poland, Ohio. He often joked that his parents wanted to change his name to Herbert after the stock market crashed in October of that year. He graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1948. It was in high school that he developed his life-long love of football and a passionate pride in being a “Campbellite.” He lettered in football two years, and was a member of the undefeated Red Devil champion team of 1945. He always talked proudly of playing under iconic Campbell coach John Knapic. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as an ambulance driver and medic in the U.S. Army. He was presently a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown, the United Steelworkers of America, the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR), and was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 11551. Like many of the “Greatest Generation,” after high school he began his career at Cold Metal Products in Youngstown, where he retired on March 31, 1991 after 41 years. He held several positions at CMP, taking a two year break to serve his country in the Korean War (1951-1953). His crowning moment was receiving a Suggestion Plan award in 1975, which was the largest award payment in the Youngstown plant’s history. He also drove a school bus for Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Austintown, in addition to lending a hand whenever necessary in the car wash business owned by his wife’s family. On November 3, 1951, he married the former Joann N. Iandimarino, who passed away on September 27, 2005. The pair were charter members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Austintown, where Mr. Forgac donated countless hours toward others. He was a church usher, counter, president of the Men’s Club, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and the Parrish Council. Avid bingo players were familiar with his booming voice as caller and clerk during the games. He leaves his two sons, Ernest J. Forgac Jr. (Debra) of North Lima and Brian P. Forgac of Austintown; and his daughter, Mary Anne Anderson (Randal) of New Middletown, with whom he made his home; nine grandchildren, Justin J. Forgac, Shannon N. Forgac, Lisa M. Forgac, Brianna L. Forgac, Nicholas J. Forgac, Matthew M. Peterson, Laura E. Peterson, Sarah L. Peterson, and Rachel N. Peterson; and a great-grandson, Noah Lee Wertz; sisters Ruth Gresh of Youngstown and Jean DeRose (Michael) of Canfield. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary J., who died September 3, 2010, an infant daughter, and sisters Delores V. Forgac and Marion Dunchak. Family will receive friends on Monday, December 6, 2010 from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel.
