Gene R. Leighty, age 81, of Austintown, formerly of Struthers, passed away Monday morning at his residence. He was born November 26, 1923 in Scottdale, PA, a son of the late Leland and Olive (Gossard) Leighty. He was an assembler in the desk division for General Fireproofing for 38 years retiring in 1985. He was a graduate of Struthers High School class of 1942, an avid sports fan, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gene served in the US Army during WWII. Gene is survived by his wife, of 55 years, the former Mildred Foley whom he married February 26, 1949; four daughters: Kathy Montgomery of Youngstown, Peggy (Jack) Allan of Howland, Mary Jo (Sam) Judy of Austintown, and Jeannie (Frank) Bindas of Mineral Ridge; twelve grandchildren: Shelly, Edwin, and Shari Montgomery, Stacie (Steven) Gerberry, Andria Donchatz, Shannan (Chris) Haluska, Brian (Kathy) and Joseph Hoffman, Sarah, Adam, Katie, and Olivia Bindas and six great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother William G. Leighty. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Wednesday evening and 10–11 AM Thursday morning at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel. Services will be held at 11 AM Thursday morning at the funeral home.
