Genevieve B. Smuke

Genevieve B. 'Jennie' Smuke, age 78, formerly of 3000 Meadow Lane in Warren, died at 6:20 PM Monday March 20, 2006 at her son's home in Cortland following a lengthy battle with lung cancer. She was born Genevieve Barna on September 10, 1927 in Warren, the daughter of John and Ann (Pawelechek) Barna. A Trumbull county resident for her entire life, she graduated from Howland High School in 1945 and worked for Trumbull Lamp from 1945 to 1955. A lifelong member of St. James Church, Jennie was a regular member at the 37 1/2 neighborhood reunions. She loved being involved with the activities of her family and was very involved in her granddaughter, Stefanie's life. Jennie enjoyed being active with her fellow residents of North River Commons in community events, walking and social activities. She was an ardent Cleveland Indians fan and Bingo player and enjoyed visiting various casinos. She and her husband, Edward A. Smuke, whom she married May 7, 1955, owned and operated Quality Supermarket on Youngstown Road for 31 years. Edward preceded her in death on May 4, 2001. Jennie will be deeply missed by her son, Edward P. Smuke and his wife, Cristina of Cortland; one daughter, Judith A. Smuke of Columbus; one granddaughter, Stefanie N. Smuke with the United States Coast Guard in Portsmouth, VA and two brothers, Alex Barna of Cranberry Township, PA and Paul Barna of Warren. Jennie is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews along with 3 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren, all of whom she enjoyed spending time with and who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve and Jerry Barna and most recently by her sister, Olga Atkins. Arrangements are being handled by Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel in Warren where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 23, 2006 with Rev. Charles W. Crumbley officiating. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery.
