George J. Marchin

George J. Marchin, age 78, of Champion, formerly of Cortland, Ohio, died Sunday, March 11, 2007, at 6:00 AM at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, Ohio. He was born on May 19, 1928 in Chestnut Ridge, PA., the son of the late Paul and Zuzzi (Swardel) Marchin. George was a graduate of Cortland High School class of 1947. In the past George worked at Wollam Grocery Store as a butcher and for Petrak and Wollam Oil Company as an oil delivery driver and mechanic. For many years he was a truck driver for Service Guide Inc. in Cortland. George was a member of St. Robert's Bellarmine Church in Cortland; the FOPA Lodge # 12 where he was past president of the Association and the Moose Lodge # 1012 in Cortland. He was affiliated with the Red Cross; Cortland Boy Scouts and had coached little league. Swimming at Avalon and Quantum was prescribed for George's physical rehabilitation but it also allowed him to develop many long lasting friendships. He is survived by his caregiver, Marilyn Canyo with whom he made his home in Champion. Also survivig are two sons, David Marchin of Siloam Springs, AR., and Neal (Laura) Marchin of Plano, TX.; two daughters, Bonnie (Peter) Savageau of Shrewsbury, ME., and Nanci Johnson of Vilonia, AR. as well as five grandchildren. George is survived by three sisters, Helen Dubasik of Warren, Catherine Johnston and Margaret Roscoe and sister-in-law Virginia Marchin all of Cortland. He leaves many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Marchin, a brother John Marchin and three sister, Ann Gaydar, Eleanor Paajanen and Dorothy Marchin. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Roberts Catholic Church, 4659 Niles Cortland Rd., Cortland, Ohio, on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 10 AM. with the Rev. Carl Kish and Rev. Jesse Clay officiating. The Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Per Georges's wishes James 'Buzzy' Governor will sprinkle his ashes over the former Marchin farm which is where George grew up, formerly lived and deeply loved. In lieu of flowers material contributions may be made to Champion Township Reserve Fire Fighters, 139 Champion St., Warren, Ohio 44483; Jesus Is The Way Fellowship Church, 1142 Bingham St. N.W., Warren, Ohio 44485 or St. Robert Bellarmine Church in memory of George Marchin. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel, 164 North High Street, Cortland, Ohio
