George J. Nites, Sr. 77 of Howland Township, died Sunday morning, June 1, 2014, at Lake Vista of Cortland. He was born June 23, 1936 in Rochester, Pennsylvania the son of the late John and Mary Nites. He and his wife, Sophia had been Lordstown residents for all of their married life. George was a graduate of Ambridge (Pa.) High School. He served in the Army for three years from 1956-1959 attaining the rank of sergeant and was stationed in Ireland and Iceland for his foreign service. George retired after 32 years service as an assembler at General Motors Lordstown. George was a member of St. Demetrios Orthodox Church in Warren, UAW No. 1112 for 32 years and the American Legion. He enjoyed photography and painting with oils, acrylics and watercolors, especially landscapes. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins fan. He is survived by two sons, George J. (Anne) Nites Jr. of Sagamore Hills, OH and Manny Nites of Howland and three grandchildren, Natalie A. Nites, Erika E. Nites and Zachary E. Nites. His wife of nearly 40 years, Sophia Iliaki Nites, whom he married November 25, 1962 preceded him in death in 2002. One sister, Marcia Gianoutsos and two brothers, Emanuel and Paul Nites have also preceded him in death. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Rev. Constantine Valantasis will officiate. Burial will be at Lordstown Village Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 70 W. Streetsboro St., Suite 201, Hudson, OH 44236.
