George Richard Raiger

AUSTINTOWN-There will be a funeral service held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 9, 2007 in the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel for George R. Raiger, 77, who passed away at 4:10PM Saturday, October 6, 2007 in the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Boardman after becoming stricken at home. George was born April 20, 1930 in Youngstown, the son of the late George and Marie (Fleps) Raiger and lived in the area all of his life. George was a 1949 graduate of Rayen High School and a 1957 graduate of Youngstown State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. George was currently driving school bus for the Austintown Local School District for the last 25 years. George also was self-employed, owning Boardman Chair Rental and Sales with his wife Joan from 1972 until retiring October 1, 2007. He also previously worked as manager with Stambaugh-Thompson Co, W.T. Grant Co. and Strouss’. George was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served from 1949 until his honorable discharge in 1952. George was a member of the Canfield United Methodist Church, the Alliance of Transylvania Saxons and the Youngstown Branch 30 since 1947 and received a certificate of life membership in June 1987. He held offices of 3rd Vice President, 1st Vice President, and was President from 1970-1976 and again from 1978-1979. George has served on the A.T.S. National Board of Directors as a Trustee fro 1977 until presently. He was currently honored in 1994 as Man of the Year by Branch 30. He belonged to the Youngstown Juniors, and Saxon Mr. & Mrs. Club. George has been involved with and held the position of Commissioner in the Bocce League when it began until 1999. He bowled with the Saxon Travel League for several years. George was a member of the Masonic Western Star Lodge #21, Scottish Rite, Aut Mori Grotto, Al Koran of Cleveland, and the Youngstown Shrine Club. A loving, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, George will be sadly missed by his wife of 53 years the former Joan Ross, whom he married November 20, 1953; a daughter Karen L. (Gregg) Weaver of Salem; a sister Mary Daprile of Westchester, Pa; an aunt Till Niethamer of Swarthmore, Pa; four grandchildren Dr. Joshua A. (Melissa) Weaver, Jacob A. (Amy) Weaver, Jordan A. Weaver and his fiancée Amy Naramore, and Jessica L. (Joseph) Boyle; and a great grandchild to be brought into this world soon. Besides his parents, George is preceded in death by a son John R. Raiger; and brothers William and Edward Raiger. Family will receive friends on Monday, October 8, 2007 from 4 until 7 PM in the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Saxon Ladies Society #22 Scholarship Fund 3838 Timothy Lane Youngstown, OH 44511.
