George S. Scott

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel for George Sangster Scott of Boardman who passed away on Sunday evening at his home. George was born January 20, 1926 in Youngstown the son of George S. and Flavel (Tullis) Scott, Sr. A WWII Marine veteran, George was at Iwo Jima for the much celebrated “raising of the flag” as a member of the 5th Marine Division Easy Company. He received two purple hearts and has been mentioned in several books regarding the Iwo Jima flag raising. He was a truck driver at Century Foods where he served as the Teamsters Shop Steward before working for the United States Postal Service as a clerk for thirty years. George was formerly the president of the postal workers union in the late 1960’s. He was a member of the V.F.W, the Hillman Lodge of the Masons, was a contributor to the Commander’s Club at the Disabled American Veteran’s, and was a contributor to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. George enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, listening to talk radio, and most recently enjoyed the company of his great-grandchildren who he loved dearly. Besides his wife, the former Donna Marie Neuman whom he married December 19, 1948, George leaves four children: Cathy (William) Braham of Lake Milton, Carol (Paul) Foster of Austintown, George (Rhonda) Scott of Ellsworth, and Robert (Lori) Scott of Austintown. He also leaves a sister Anita (Steve) Chlebus of Erie, PA and three brothers: Neil (Pearl) Scott of Dayton, John “Jack” (Rose) Scott of Youngstown, and Richard Scott of Findley. Five grandchildren: Amy Nabb, Jessica Vondrasek, Jason Scott, Tara Scott, and Robert John Scott as well as four step grandchildren: William, Randy, and Joseph Braham, and Mario Rotunna also survive. George also leaves two great-grandchildren: Taylor and Austin Nabb as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Doris Mae Scott, and two brothers: David and Robert Scott. Friends and family may call from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel.
