Gordon Manners Hare

May 30, 1932 — August 17, 2014

Gordon Manners Hare, 82 of Howland Township, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, August 17, 2014. He was born May 30, 1932 in Warren, the son of the late Donald and Bertha Manners Hare. He was raised in Warren and has lived in Howland since 1961, in the home that he built. Gordon was a 1950 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. He then served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He worked over 30 years as a customer service engineer with IBM, retiring in 1987. Gordon was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he had served as a longtime usher and was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. He was a member with his wife, Phyllis, of the Crosstrailers Western Style Square Dance Club and had been part owner, with other club members, of the Howland Grange Hall for several years. He was a member of the Trumbull County Iris Society and served on the Howland Tigertown playground planning committee. Gordon volunteered with Mobile Meals and enjoyed flower gardening, cooking and traveling. He was very artistic and enjoyed painting, especially in acrylics and enjoyed working with stained glass. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Phyllis Marie Was Hare, whom he married July 23, 1960; three daughters, Jane E. (Dale Shimek) Hare of San Diego, Calif., Margaret L. (Joe) Stefanik of Lebanon, Ind. and Alice M. O'Connor of Dover, Mass.; six grandchilren, Meredith, Joseph and Hannah Stefanik and Bridget, Mitchell and Ryan O'Connor; one sister, Joyce Thomas of Howland; his mother-in-law, Irene G. Was of Warren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their thanks to Gordon's caregivers, Kristy and Anthony, for their loving care. With their help and the help of family and friends, Gordon was able to remain at home until the time of his passing. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2014, at the Christ Episcopal Church in Warren and also one hour prior to the 11 a.m. memorial service on Friday at the church. The Rev. J. Jeffrey Baker will officiate. Military honors will be accorded at the church following the service.
