Grace E. Gettman

Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday at the Four Mile Run Christian Church in Austintown for Grace E. Gettman, 94, who died early Tuesday evening at her residence. She was born June 4, 1915 in Yellow Springs, a daughter of Ben and Jessie (Burdell) Geiger, and she came to this area as a child. She was a 1933 graduate of Liberty High School and she was also a graduate of the Youngstown College School of Business, where she taught for many years before retiring. She was a longtime member of the church and served as its secretary for 30 years. She was also a Sunday school teacher and superintendant, vacation bible school leader, and president of the Women's Christian Fellowship. She was a Gray Lady volunteer, a volunteer with the Red Cross at Woodside Receiving Hospital, and she enjoyed golfing and bowling with the Golden Gals Bowling League. She married Homer G. Gettman May 13, 1944 and he preceded her in death October 20, 1992. She is survived by two daughters; Shirley (Myron) Shaffer of Austintown, with whom she made her home; and Barbara (Richard) Ballenger of Austintown; eight grandchildren; Heidi (Bruce) Frankford of St. Petersburg, FL; Tim (Leilani) Shaffer of Canfield; Dan Shaffer of Austintown; Scott (Mary) Shaffer of Berlin Center; Myron "Buddy" Shaffer of Austintown; Douglas (Marie) Ballenger of Moorehaven, FL; Virginia Ballenger of Sadieville, KY; and Jessika Ballenger of Austintown; and fifteen great grandchildren. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, "Bud" and Pete Geiger; and two sisters; Lola Randall and Minnie Humphrey. Friends may call from 6-8pm Friday at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel and from 10-11am Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Four Mile Run Christian Church in Grace's memory.
