A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church for Gregory Scott Velk of Canfield who passed away on Saturday of a brain tumor. Gregory was born July 13, 1960 in Canfield the son of John and Mary Velk and spent most of his life in Canfield. He was a 1978 graduate of Canfield High School and spent the last several years as a caregiver for his father who has Alzheimer’s disease. He previously worked at Mill Creek Park as a groundskeeper and had also worked at Dinesol Plastics in Niles. He also spent time working in Pasadena California for the HMO Kaiser-Permanente. Gregory was an avid gardener where everything flourished under his care. He also enjoyed collecting antique glassware and pottery as well as refinishing antique furniture. An avid bird watcher, Gregory loved nature and working outdoors. He was devoted to his parents, and was a resource to his neighbors providing handyman and gardening assistance. Besides his parents of Canfield, Gregory leaves his brothers: Randy (Kim) Velk of Lake Milton, Jack Velk of Greenford, and his sisters Elizabeth (Richard) Shutrump of Poland and Vicki Bittle of Pasadena, CA. Friends and family may call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel. Interment will take place in Green Haven Memorial Gardens immediately following the Mass at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Thursday.
