Harold "Hal" Hugh Caldwell, 73 of Niles passed away at 12:45 AM June 13, 2008, at the Autumn Hills Care Center due to an extended illness. Hal was born the son of the late Ralph H. and Mary (Rothwell) Caldwell Ice on June 2, 1935, in Washington, PA. Moving to the area in 1940, Hal worked in the maintenance department for Mahoning Valley Sanitation District (MVSD) retiring from there in March 1998. Hal also owned and operated "Hal's Barber Shop" in Lordstown. Hal served in the Army from 1959 to 1961. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Niles where he was a deacon, elder, and adult Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Toastmasters, was the former Grand Marshall of the Lordstown Apple Festival. He also liked antiques, especially tractors. Hal is survived by his wife, Jean L. (Viola) Caldwell whom he married June 22, 1985. Together they shared 23 years of marriage. Also surviving Hal are his children, Jean (Lance) Elmore of Cortland; Jill (Calvin) Haycock of Ketchum, Idaho; Jay (Tami) Caldwell of Niles; Stepchildren Paul (JoEllen) Chaney Jr. of Lordstown; Brian (Karen) Chaney of Howland; Brother Lloyd (Joyce) Caldwell of Newton Falls; sisters Sandra (Richard) Culp of Garrettsville and Beverly Stewart of Newton Falls; four grandchildren Nathan Ealey, Brett Caldwell, Alex Caldwell and Brooke Chaney; three step grandchildren MaryJo Novotny, Christina (Robert) Cellars and William Novotny; and several nieces and nephews. Hal was preceded in death by his first wife Nancy (Boyd) Caldwell whom he married on August 4, 1957; his parents, stepfather Henry Ice; a brother Howard Ice and a nephew Larry Caldwell. The family will be receiving friends on Monday June 16, 2008, from 6-9 PM at the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel and then again from 10-11AM Tuesday at the First Christian Church of Niles where Rev. Cynthia Klingemier will officiate a service at 11AM. Burial will take place at Niles City Cemetery. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the church at 33 Arlington Ave. North, Niles, Ohio 44446.
