Harold L. Smith

North Jackson- Funeral services will be 11 am Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel for Harold Smith who died Tuesday evening at his residence. Harold was born February 20, 1910 in North Jackson the son of Will and Mary (Guiste) Smith and was a life long area resident. Harold retired in 1972 from the Department of Defense U.S. Army as a Civilian Executive Officer. He served in the Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict and also spent 22 years in the Naval Reserves. He was a member of the First Federated Church, Charter member and Life member of Meander Post VFW #9571, past commander and County Commander American Legion Post #737, Life Member of 40et 8- Voiture #60, graduated from Jackson Milton High School in 1929, also a member of Meander Lodge #765, Mahoning Valley Scottish Rite, Mahoning Farm Bureau Council, Jr. Fair Board, North Jackson Friends of the Library. After his retirement Harold became involved with the Ohio Forestry Department serving on the following; Soil and Water District Supervisor, Past President and Trustee of North East Ohio Forester Association, Trustee for 8 years of the Ohio Forestry Association, Past President and member of Mahoning Valley Ohio Unit of W.B.C.C.I. and a Trustee for the Mahoning County Planning Commission. Harold and his wife Dorothy were honored to be the Ohio Tree Farmer of the Year in 1974 & 1985. He is survived by children; Nancy Kimpton of North Jackson, Larry L.Smith and wife Linda of Capitola, California, brothers; Earla Smith of North Jackson, Darrel Smith of Lordstown, grandson Lance Smith of California granddaughters; Cheryl East of Pace, Florida, Christine Spalding of North Jackson, Lynn Wood of Canfield, great grandchildren; Joshua, Ashley, Megan, Tyler and Victoria East of Florida, Lillian, Isaac, Phoebe Wood of Canfield, Philip, Luke, Timothy, Caleb, Joshua, Daniel and Faith Spalding of North Jackson. Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy I. Gusbeth whom he married June 22, 1935 and who died April 2002, four sisters; Thelma Graham, Sylvia Hallas, Velda and Mona Smith and a brother Lauren Smith. Family and friends may call from 5-7 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to Hospice or the Salvation Army.
