Hazel F. Buckholdt

January 4, 1913 — October 27, 2003

Canfield—Memorial services will be held at 4 PM Thursday November 13,2003 at Canfield Presbyterian Church for Miss Hazel F. Buckholdt who died Monday morning in Beeghly Oaks. Miss Buckholdt was born Jan. 4, 1913 in New Milford Ohio the daughter of William and Anna VanEman Buckholdt. At the age of six her family moved to Garfield, Ohio where she attended the first eight grades of school in a small two room schoolhouse. She graduated from Goshen High School and went on to complete her education at Kent State University. Hazel was an elementary school teacher for 36 years, first teaching 10 years in the Garfield Schools then 26 years at Canfield Village Elementary School. If her students learned nothing else from her, they learned to love animals, to read prodigiously-and to spell. Hazel’s church was very important to her. She was a member of the Canfield Presbyterian Church where she had served as an Elder, Deacon, and had taught Sunday school for over 30 years. She also attended Old North Baptist Church where she was a member of the Golden Heirs. Hazel was honored with being the first female Grand Marshall at the July 4th Parade in Canfield in 1973. She was a member of the Republican Women’s Club, volunteered for Appalachian work and also did volunteer work at Little Forest and Park Vista Nursing Homes. Animals were a very important part of Hazels life, as she was a Life Member of the Animal Charity League, the Salem Humane Society as well as national Humane Society organizations. Hazel is survived by a nephew David Buckholdt in Bayside WI, and a niece Paula Schneider in Maryland. She was preceded in death by her sister Iva E. Buckholdt and two brothers Robert and Bernard Buckholdt. The family requests that material tributes take the form of donations to the Canfield Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
