Helen Baldwin Moherman

January 25, 1915 — March 12, 2012

Helen Baldwin Moherman entered into eternal rest at her home in North Jackson on March 11th, surrounded by her family. Helen was born in Gustavus, Ohio, to Rosamond Mae Harpst and Park Nelson Baldwin on January 25, 1915. Her family moved to West Farmington and after the death of her mother, when Helen was 12, to North Jackson. She met and married the late John Eugene Moherman on August 4, 1940, sharing 65 year of marriage with him. A graduate of North Jackson High School, Helen attended Kent State University and later graduated from Youngstown College with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She retired from teaching second grade at Jackson Milton Local Schools in 1980. Always a teacher, at age 90 she volunteered for Lake Milton Head Start by assisting teachers with lesson prep. Helen loved the outdoors and often shared bouquets of flowers picked from her garden with her family and friends. She donated a sidewalk for the students of Southeast Primary School to enjoy in their butterfly garden. In her later years, she enjoyed watching the wildlife in her back yard and shared stories and facts about nature with willing listeners. The oldest female citizen currently living in North Jackson, Helen was a member of the First Federated Church and former president of the Keenagers group. She was an original member of the North Jackson Citizens' Association and volunteered to help with Red Cross blood drives. She had a notorious sense of humor and was always ready to tell a story or good joke. Halloween often brought tricks as well as treats. Vacations were a time of joy and excitement for her. She always had her bag packed ready to go at a moment's notice. She and her Ohio sisters made many journeys to visit her youngest sister, Eleanor, as she moved around the country. Helen especially enjoyed the many camping adventures with daughter, Natalie, and her family. At age 80 she traveled to Alaska, to fulfill a lifelong desire to see the country where her father and uncles had driven in the mid-30s, a time when no street signs were present for directions. Helen's strong dedication to family will always remain a part of her legacy. Her sisters gathered frequently to celebrate occasions, which allowed the next generation to build relationships. She loved each child, grandchild, great grandchild, niece and nephew and made each feel important and loved. Helen leaves to cherish her memory her four daughters, Natalie Ann (Jerry) Dechant, Helen Jeanne (Rodney) Sudimak, Rosemary (John) Laughlin, Valerie Grace (Kevin) Toole. She also leaves ten grandchildren Shea (Amy) and Scott Sudimak, Natalie(Chuck) Keefe, Blake(Jennifer) Dechant, Jaimie, and Jonathan Laughlin, Amanda (Mario) Donato, David, Brianne, and Ben Toole and five very special great- grandchildren, Stephen Lewis , McKenna, Cody and Hunter Keefe and Troy Sudimak, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like thank hospice and especially thank special friends Karen, Sherry, Ellen, Nancy, and Jessie for their compassion, care and many acts of kindness. Also greatly appreciated are the many neighbors who were so kind to Helen over the years. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John Eugene, three sisters, Esther Stauffer, Lois Miller and Eleanor Thomas. She was the last of her generation in the Park Baldwin family. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home, Fred Schrock officiating.
