On August 9, 2013, Herbert C. Hess of Austintown, Ohio and formerly of Raven, Virginia passed away at the age of 84. Herbert worked as a die setter at the General Motors Lordstown plant for over 30 years, retiring in 1989. He was one of the original ten founding members of the United Auto Workers Union local 1714. Herbert belonged to the Primitive Baptist Church in Raven Virginia. Herbert leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 61 years Dallas (Mutter) Hess, daughters Shirley Hess of Austintown and Phyllis (David) Roberts of North Jackson. A sister Sally (Willard) Owens of Prater Virginia. Two half brothers Robert (Betty) Whitt of Virginia and Glenn (Johnnie) Whitt of Texas. Herbert also leaves grandchildren Amy (Joe) Huffman, Richard W. Nelson III, Claire Taylor, Jessica Taylor, Matthew Roberts and Gina Roberts, along with seven great-grandchildren. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, two step fathers, two daughters, five brothers, three sisters, fourteen step brothers and sisters, and one great-grandchild. Calling hours for family and friends will be held on August 12, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Lane Family Funeral Home's Austintown Chapel. Interment will be held at the Mutter-Addison Family Cemetery in Oakwood Virginia.
