Howard N. Hubbard Jr.

A memorial services celebrating the life of Howard N. Hubbard Jr. will be held at 4 PM, Saturday June 4, at Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown. Howard passed away Friday morning May 27 at Brookdale of Austintown at the age of 81. Howard was born February 17, 1935 in Lorain, Ohio the son of Howard N. Sr. and Mary Phillis (Garver) Hubbard. He was a 1957 graduate of Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Howard worked as a superintendent for the steel industry retiring in 2005 at the age of 70 as the Director of Operations for General Refractories. This was a company he started known as GR Amtec in Youngstown before selling it to General Refractories. He was a past president of the Iron and Steel Society and a past president of AIME where he started the advanced technologies group and ran it for years. He was also the past president of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry of Civil War of Lorain, Ohio for 12 years, overseeing many major improvements, as well as one of the founders and president of the Buckeye Horse Park. Howard leaves his wife of almost 60 years, the former Jeanette R. "Jan" Russell. Howard married Jan on August 25, 1956 and together they raised 4 children. Besides his wife he leaves 3 sons, Matt Hubbard of Indianapolis, Ted (Winn) Hubbard of San Francisco, and Andrew Hubbard of Columbus, 1 daughter, Jennifer (William) Milliner of North Jackson, 1 sister, Claudia (Rick) Vanek of Sheffield Lake, 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Howard was preceded in death by his parents. Family will receive friends from 3 to 4 PM Saturday, June 4, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, 1105 Elm Street Youngstown, Ohio 44505, where services will start at 4 PM. Arrangements were entrusted to Lane Family Funeral Homes Austintown Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to either the 103rd OVI Foundation, 5501 E. Lake Road Sheffield Lake, OH 44054 or to Hospice of the Valley 5190 Market Street Youngstown, OH 44512 in Howard's name.
