Irene Juliette Ridgway, 89 of Cortland passed away Tuesday August 3, 2010 at Lake Vista Nursing Center. She was born in Leavittsburg on April 27, 1921; she is the daughter of George Warren and Kathryn Captolia (Elwell) Taylor. A lifetime area resident, Irene was a member of East Mecca United Methodist Church. Irene worked as a press operator and inspector at Johnson Rubber for 17 years, retiring April 29, 1983. She was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II. She is survived by her two children; Jerry May Austin of Canton, Michigan and Fred L. Davis of Little Rock, Arkansas; a sister Betty Woodyard of Newton Falls; 4 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 9 great children, 8 step great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and 5 step great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Donald Ridgway, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be 11am Saturday August 7, 2010 at Shafer- Winans Funeral Chapel, Cortland with Rev. Paul Leone officiating. The family will be receiving friends Friday from 6-8pm, with an Eastern Star service starting at 6pm. Interment will be Hillside Cemetery, Bazetta Township. Material contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley or to Lake Vista to have a bench made and placed at the nursing home in Irene's memory.
