James Ramage Elliott

August 10, 1929 — October 13, 2007

James R. Elliott, age 78, of Cortland, went home to be with the Lord at 8:30 pm Saturday, October 13, 2007, at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, following a long courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born August 10, 1929 in Warren the son of the late Arthur Raymond and Margaret A. (Ramage) Elliott. He was a lifetime Cortland resident. Jim was a 1947 graduate of Cortland High School and attended Youngstown State University. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1948-1953 and attended officer candidate school. Jim worked as a mechanical engineer and senior project engineer at Republic Steel/LTV Steel for 35 years retiring September 1991. He was a member of the Cortland United Methodist Church, the Iron and Steel Engineers, LTV Retirees, the N.R.A. and life member and past president of the Cortland Conservation League-Mosquito Bowmen. Jim was an active life member and past president of the Cortland Lions Club, where he also had served as treasurer. He was honored by the Cortland Lions when they presented him with the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lions International Foundation. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, gardening and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Audrey P. (Evans) Elliott, whom he married August 21, 1948; two daughters, Debbie (Ken) Wiswell and Pam (Chuck) Trunick both of Cortland; one son, James E. (Patricia) Elliott of Cortland; seven grandchildren, Missy (Mike) Schmader, Michelle and Mindy Wiswell, Meghan and Lauren Trunick and Mike and Mark Elliott; two great granddaughters, Emma and Mara Schmader and one brother, Arthur R. (Anne) Elliott Jr. of Solvang, Calif. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. A private family memorial service will be held at the Hillside Cemetery Chapel with Pastor Yesudas Devadan officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cortland. In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to Forum Health at Home Hospice, 8747 Squires Lane N.E., Warren 44484.
