Jane F Phillips

June 8, 1924 — December 9, 2010

Mrs. Jane F. Phillips died Thursday evening, December 9, 2010 at 9:30 p.m. in Assumption Village Nursing Home, where she made her home since May. She was born June 8, 1924 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John and Tekla (Tabaka) Kostelnak (Koscielniak). She was educated in Youngstown City Schools and graduated from the Rayen School in 1942. She was employed as a secretary for the Youngstown Board of Education, and then she worked in the circulation department of the Vindicator for six years. Later she worked for three years at St. Paul's Monastery in Canfield typing orders for the Alba House Communications. Finally, she worked as an office manager for the United Excavating until her retirement. Jane was a charter member of St. Michael Church in Canfield and had belonged to its Altar and Rosary Society. A friendly and extraverted person, she was known and loved in the parishes where her nephew, Rev. William J. Loveless, was assigned, especially St. Pius X Parish in Warren for the last 17 years, where many parishioners called her "Aunt Jane." She had a lifelong devotion to Mary, the Blessed Mother of Jesus. Jane was also active as the secretary of an East Side-Republican Avenue gathering of old neighbors. Jane loved to dance, and it was because she loved to jitterbug that she met her husband Nick Phillips, whom she married July 5, 1948. She and Nick made their home on Fairground Boulevard in Canfield. Nick preceded her in death on October 4, 1976. To cherish her memory, Jane leaves one daughter Jan Ellis (Mike Gahagan) of Laughlin, Nevada; two sons Kenneth (Denise) Phillips of Boardman and Nicholas Phillips of Schenectady, New York; a nephew who was like a son to her, Rev. William J. Loveless, Pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Warren; three grandchildren, Taylor Ann, David and Heather; nine nephews and nieces, numerous great-nephews and great-nieces and at least one great-great-nephew Nathaniel. Besides her parents and husband, Nick, Jane was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Thelma Connor, Mary Kostelnak, Ted Kostelnak, Helen Loveless and John Kostelnak, Jr. Calling hours will take place on Sunday, December 12, 2010 from 4 until 6 p.m. in the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave, Austintown Ohio, 44515, where a prayer service, a Cursillo Bible Vigil will take place at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by her nephew, Rev. William J. Loveless, at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 13, 2010 at St. Michael Church, 281 Grandview Drive, Canfield, Ohio, 44406, preceded by closing prayers to be recited at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home prior in leaving for the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests the memorial contributions take the form of donations in Jane's name to either St. Michael Church, 281 Grandview Dr, Canfield, Ohio, 44406 or to St. Pius X Catholic Church 1401 Moncrest NW, Warren, Ohio 44485.
