Janet Jessica Johnson

February 16, 1924 — December 7, 2016

Janet Johnson, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. She was a long time resident of Canfield, only having recently moved to Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Poland. Janet was born to Eugene and Frances (Cooper) Thompson in Butler, Pennsylvania on February 16, 1924, and was raised as a farm girl. She met her husband, Nils P. Johnson, at Slippery Rock University while she was a student and he was a member of the U S Army Air Corps. They were married on Friday, June 13, 1947 in Slippery Rock and began their married life in Columbus, Ohio while Nils attended Ohio State Law School. Janet taught kindergarten and paid the bills. Nils promised her she would never have to work outside the home again, and he kept his promise. Janet raised five successful children in a loving, caring, and moral household. Janet had an extraordinary faith and was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church of Cornersburg, and St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Tarpon Springs, Florida. She served on numerous committees and boards, including the Canfield Women's Club, the Republican Women's Club and the Visiting Nurses Association. She took up golf when her children were older, and enjoyed many rounds at Tippecanoe Country Club with her husband, friends and family. Together with her husband she quietly supported her community and, in particular, the new Canfield library. Janet's husband, Nils P. Johnson, predeceased her in March of 2011, after 63 years of marriage. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Eugenia Korn. She leaves her five children: daughter, Rebecca Heikkinen of Canfield, sons and daughters-in-law Nils, Jr. and Kathleen, Eric and Mary, and Scott and Joy, all of Canfield, and Bruce and Susan, of Dublin, Ohio. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and her sister, Margaret Swingle of Squim, Washington. Janet always counted her sister, children, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren as her best friends. Friends are welcome to call at Lane's Funeral Home in Canfield on Sunday, December 11th, from 1 to 3pm, and at 10 am on Monday, at Zion Lutheran Church. A funeral service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Monday, December 12th, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations in Janet's name be made to the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, for the benefit of the Canfield Branch.
