Jeanne M Bowman

January 26, 1911 — April 10, 2012

Jeanne M. MacKenzie Bowman, 101, formerly of Warren, died Tuesday afternoon, April 10, 2012, at her daughter's home in Kinsman. She was born January 26, 1911 in Emsworth, Pa. the daughter of the late Dr. Robert W. and Jean Agatha Cavanagh MacKenzie and sister of the late Robert MacKenzie of Pittsburgh and Florida. Jeanne grew up in New Castle, Pa. and lived and worked in Pittsburgh before marrying. She enjoyed life to the very fullest. Her husband, Herbert F. "Red" Bowman, whom she married November 30, 1935, preceded her in death March 24, 1998 and one daughter, Patricia Jeanne also preceded in death. Jeanne is survived by three daughters, Phyllis (Richard) Flemming of Kinsman, Elaine (Robert) Bowers of Powell, Ohio and Rosalind (Edward) Mathews of Naples, Fla.; she will also be dearly missed by her six grandchildren, Cynthia and Richard Flemming, Tanya and Kara Gibson and Robert and Tony Mathews; twelve great grandchildren, Torey, Christian and Griffin Hunkus, Zachary, Savannah and Oliver Stychno, Ian, Austin and Devon Hall, Joseph and Ryan Flemming and Madelyn Mathews and a myriad of nieces and nephews in the extended family. Until recently, Jeanne wrote great long letters, known in the family as "epistles", to family and friends all over the country. While a stay-at-home-mother, she assisted with her daughters' Girl Scout troops and school classes and was a Y-Teen advisor in Warren and an active member of the Hobby Club, where she practiced her talents in sewing, knitting, embroidery and beading. Many people were the fortunate recipients of her hand beaded Christmas stockings. Returning to work, she became cash receivable clerk at Mullees Furniture and Appliance Store for 22 years, retiring at age 70. She then began working regularly at the Trumbull County Red Cross blood drives and was awarded her 10 year service pin. Throughout the 66 years that she lived in Warrren, she was a devoted member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Nelle Smith Guild and the church choir and served as a deacon, elder and Sunday school treasurer. She joined the Warren Civic Music Association in the 1950's and assisted the membership committee for many years. Jeanne was a lifelong member of the Warren Music Club. She was a devoted member of the Warren Civic Chorus directed by John Kurtz and sang in the Christmas event of Handel's "Messiah" until she was 90. At 96, she was inducted into the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood and served as a delegate to their state convention. Many remember her as a proud Scot from her annual enjoyment of the Robby Burns Birthday Dinner and the Kirkin' of the Tartans. Last year, 140 of her family and friends came together to celebrate her 100th birthday. They were amazed that she knew everyone there by name. From 2004 until her death she lived with her daughters, splitting her time between Florida and Ohio. She had become well known at both the 1st Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, Fla. and the Kinsman Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2012, at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service Saturday at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Warren. Pastor David Robert Black will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 119 Laird Ave. NE, Warren 44483.
