Joan Carolyn Stone

Joan Carolyn (Gray) Stone, age 65, formerly of Southington died Monday afternoon, October 1, 2007, at Autumn Winds Retirement Lodge in Schertz, Texas. She was born February 12, 1942 in Warren the daughter of the late George Bernard Gray and Lucy Mary (Kean) Gray Athya. Joan was raised in Cortland and lived until recently in Southington, where she lived since 1966. Joan was a 1960 graduate of Cortland High School and attended Warren Business College. She was a member of Jubilee Foursquare Church in Warren and had been active with and taught children's church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, tole painting and spending time with her granddaughter. Her husband, Robert William Stone, whom she married October 16, 1960, preceded in death July 27, 2002. She is survived by her mother, Lucy M. Gray Athya and her stepfather, James Athya of Warren; her son-in-law, Daniel Long and one granddaughter, Rachael Long both of Schertz, TX and one brother, James Edward Gray of Warren. Joan was preceded in death on September 27, 2007 by her daughter, Brenda Long. One brother, Jerry Earl Gray, also preceded in death. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the 11:00 am funeral service Monday, October 8, 2007. Pastor Joseph Wetzl will be officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.
