John A Marsh

John A. "Pappy" Marsh, age 95, of Bazetta Township, passed away peacefully with his son, Michael at his side Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Gillette Nursing Home in Warren. He was born June 1, 1913 in Follansbee, West Virginia the son of the late George T. and Myrtle (Wright) Marsh. A longtime area resident, he attended Newton Falls High School through his junior year and graduated in 1932 from Warren G. Harding High School. The Newton Falls basketball team went to state his junior year. He won numerous awards in football, track and basketball in high school. Pappy retired after 40 years service from Republic/LTV Steel Corporation, where he worked as a roller. He was a member of Cortland United Methodist Church. He enjoyed all sports, gardening, hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Pappy loved spending time with his family. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by one daughter, Ann Anne of Niles; one son, Michael W. (Rene) Marsh of Cortland; a daughter-in-law, Linda Marsh of Lexington, Ohio; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren and two sisters, Virginia McQuinney of Warren and Madeline Schick of Niles. Several nieces and nephews also survive. John was preceded in death December 21, 2008 by his loving wife of 72 years, Margaret E. "Queenie" Darbey Marsh, whom he married March 23, 1936; one son, Rev. J. Terry Marsh and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Schick, who was his best friend. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at 11:00 am Thursday, April 2, 2009, with Pastor David Vensel officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.
