Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel for John Chengelis, 84, of Austintown who passed away Saturday evening in St. Elizabeth Medical Center Boardman Campus. John was born May 23, 1927 in Youngstown, the son of Gus and Kiriakitsa (Gerakary) Chengelis. He attended South High School and was an Army Veteran of WWII. He was of the Greek Orthodox Faith, and a member of the Eagles Lodge of Austintown. John enjoyed golfing and bowling, and bowled a couple of perfect 300 games in his life. John also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and most of all spending time with his family. His wife the former Clara Moening, whom he married July of 1965, passed away June 6, 2010. John leaves two daughters; Jayne Zajac and her companion Andy Baytos of Poland, and Cindy Ambrose and her husband Mark of Niles, one granddaughter; Ashley Ruggiero Esq. of Columbus, and two sisters; Helen John of Arizona, and Bessie Mayorga and her husband Ed of Coitsville. Besides his wife and parents, John is preceded in death by a sister Sophie Faras, and a brother Phillip Chengelis. Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home where a service will be held at 11 AM Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Hospice of the Valley in John's name.
