John F Schuller

December 20, 1943 — August 31, 2013

John F Schuller, 69, of Boardman, passed away at Gateways to Better Living, Aug. 31, 2013. John came to Gateways to Better Living on June 30, 1980. He lived at Gateways for 33yrs until his passing. Prior to living at Gateways to Better Living, he spent time at the Columbus State School from 1951-1980. John leaves behind five siblings: William, Thomas, David, Roselyn, and Mary Ann. He loved his family. This was evident as his smiles and body language would brighten the room whenever his family was in his presence. He liked to show love and feel love by cuddling with others. John was very welcoming to the staff's attention and responded often with hugs. He had a way of showing his appreciation and gratitude through his grins and smiles. His housemates seemed to enjoy him and cared for him genuinely. John has found a way to touch the hearts of many throughout the years of his life. John's independence helped define him. Some would say that he was disabled but he proved that he was capable. John took pride in helping himself. Whenever John found himself in an unfamiliar environment he would instantly get on a mission to learn his whereabouts. John enjoyed when others would help him find his way, but it seemed as though he loved to explore on his own terms. He loved music and was a musician in his own way. He would hold a tune on his keyboard and was very specific about the notes he played. Those specific tones would give him auditory stimulations and soothing sensory vibrations. He loved moments alone with his keyboard as this was his favorite past time. John enjoyed trips to the spa for relaxing massages. He always took time out to relax. In fact, John made it a daily part of his life to be stress free by finding a quiet place to kick back and relax. On the sofa or in a recliner John would relax, rest, and find peace. No more worries, sickness or pain for John as he is now resting in eternal peace. John was preceded in death by his parents Blanche and William Schuller. He also leaves behind a host of friends and family. Thank you to all GTBL staff, family, friends, housemates, and nurses who helped John's journey on this earth be as safe, colorful, unique, and memorable as anyone could ever ask for. A memorial service will be held 1:30pm, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 13 at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel. Friends will be received from 1:00pm until the time of the service.
