John G. “Whitey” Futey, 89, of Howland Twp. died Monday May 22, 2006 at his residence. He was born April 17, 1917 in Farrell, PA the son of Stephen M. and Mary (Pavlik) Futey Sr. A lifetime area resident, he was an electrician by trade and he owned and operated John G. “Whitey” Futey Electric Co. for over 50 years in Niles. He was also employed by Niles Steel Products, Copperweld Steel Corp., Mahoning Valley Sanitary District as a pumphouse operator, and most recently as an electrician for Niles City Schools where he retired. John was a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Church of Warren and a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Niles, Ohio Council #1681 and life member 4th Degree Msgr. Lavery Assembly #831 of Niles. He is also a life member of BPO Elks #295 and a life member of the Niles Moose Lodge. He was a former Niles Frontliner. “Whitey” enjoyed bowling, dancing, listening to polkas, and he was a fan of the Cleveland Indians, the Browns and Notre Dame football. He looked forward to attending the annual Warren Westside and the “thirty seven and a half” reunions. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His first wife, Katherine T. (Danko) Futey whom he married in 1940 preceded him in death in 1978. His second wife Mary Ann (Mansell) Futey whom he married in 1982 preceded him in death in 1992. He is survived by a daughter Beverly J. Mindek and a son James J. (Mary Ann) Futey both of Howland and 6 grandchildren Paul P. (Amy) Mindek Jr. of Howland, Amy R. (Jose) Davis of McDonald, PA, Heather K. (Michael) Ognibene of Howland, Joseph A. (Linda) Futey of Niles, Brian K. Futey of Cary, NC, and Christine (Edward) Lipnos of Twinsburg, OH. He also leaves 9 great grandchildren; Philip, Robert, Hannah, Natalie, Javon, Caitlyn, Jared, and Joey, 3 sisters Mary A. Futey of Warren, Margaret (Eugene) Nolfi of Warren, Clara F. (Neil) Hagan of Howland, special friend Martha Bartlett of Howland, and numerous nieces and nephews great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son in law Paul P. Mindek Sr., brothers Joseph J. and Stephen M. Jr. and a sister Agnes S. Futey. The Rev. James Walker will celebrate a funeral mass at 10:00 AM Thursday May 25, 2006 at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church. The Rev. George Popovich and the Rev. Charles Crumbley will concelebrate. Friends will be received at Roberts-Clark Chapel from 4:00-8:00 Wednesday and from 9:00-9:30 Thursday. Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery. BPO Elks 295 will conduct a memorial service at 5:00 PM Wednesday and Niles Knights of Columbus and 4th degree will conduct a service at 7:45 PM Wednesdcay at the funeral home.
