John H. Van Valkenburg, 50, of Cortland, OH formerly of Coopersville, MI passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on Thursday evening December 30, 2010 at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, OH. He was born on April 15, 1960 in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Gary E. and Sandy L. (Herron) Van Valkenburg. John had worked for Ryder Transportation in Michigan for many years before he and his family moved to Cortland. John enjoyed fixing many things around his home including cars for his friends and family. He cherished the chance to help others and been a volunteer with his children during their time at school. He was a devote member of the Coopersville Reformed Church where he had enjoyed being a mentor for the Kids U.S.A. program. Above all he was a devoted loving husband more than nineteen years and loving father to his three children. He is survived by his wife the former Denise Coffey, sons Bradley and Jacob, and by his daughter Ally all at home in Cortland, his mother Sandy Van Valkenburg, three brothers Scott (Ellie) Van Valkenburg, Todd (Kelly) Van Valkenburg all of Grand Rapids, MI and Chris (Stacey) Van Valkenburg of Holland, MI; two sisters Paula (Paul) Wellman of Grand Rapids and Susan (Mark) Potter of Coopersville; sister-in-law Maureen Coffey of Grand Rapids and by his many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, his brother Gary E. Van Valkenburg Jr., and by both his maternal and paternal grandparents.
