Joseph Fonagy 87, of Brookfield, Ohio passed away at 7:30AM on Monday July 25, 2011 at Sharon Regional Health Hospital. Mr. Fonagy was born on July 5, 1924 in Masury a son of the John and Helen (Szabo) Fonagy. Joe was a 1942 Alumni of Brookfield High School and following graduation went on to enlist with United States Army proudly serving during the Second World War. He married his sweetheart the former Shirley M. Hougelman on March 16, 1951 and shared more than sixty years with her and their four children. Joe worked as a meat cutter for over fifty years working at various local grocery stores including Riverside Bi Lo Market and Devines before his retirement. Mr. Fonagy loved to read his Bible and was a longtime member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church where he had been a church elder for many years. He was a member of the former Masury V.F.W. Post #8860 and had always loved learning about his Hungarian Heritage. He enjoyed attending various car auctions and in earlier years working in his garden at home. Joe enjoyed life and cherished time with his family especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Shirley, daughters Gloria Combine and her husband Mark of Slippery Rock, PA, Karen Phipps and her husband Terry of Brookfield, his son Dr. Joseph Fonagy and his wife Sue of Brookfield, brother Frank Fonagy of Masury, sister Mary Kurilla of Sarasota, FL, eight grandchildren Dr. JJ Fonagy, Amber Fonagy, Trisha Stewart, Dr. Jordan Yersky, Dr. Angela Santis, Chad Fonagy, Robert Phipps, and Danielle Phipps, and by seven great-grandchildren whom he cherished. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Gail Hollern, brother John Fonagy, sister Helen Kovacs, and his great-granddaughter Abigail Stewart. The family will receive friends on Wednesday July 27, 2011 from 5:00-8:00 Madasz Funeral Chapel in Brookfield, OH. A brief prayer service will begin at 10:15AM on Thursday July 28, 2011 at the funeral home which will be followed by a procession to the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church 710 Carnegie Avenue in Sharon, PA where Rev. Robbie Arnold will conduct a funeral service beginning at 11:00AM. Burial will be at the Brookfield Township Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy the family requests that contributions be made to the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church.
