Joseph Lee Chapman

October 25, 1930 — October 27, 2014

Joseph Lee Chapman, 84, of W. Mecca, OH, passed away October 27, 2014 at his home with family by his side. Joe was born October 25, 1930 in Heisey, KY, son of Thomas and Winnie (Stanley) Chapman. He graduated from the Williamson, WV High School where he excelled at sports, mainly baseball, leading the team to a State Championship. After graduation he played for the Dodgers organization for five years, before being drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. He was assigned to a base in Maryland, where he played baseball for the US Army, and held a .377 batting average. After his honorable discharge, he played one more year professionally, before shoulder surgery ended his career. He then went on to work at General Motors in Lordstown, where he worked 34 years before retiring as a Plant Shift Superintendant in 1989. After retirement, he spent time with his grandchildren, and traveling with his son's basketball team. He loved spending time on the lake fishing with family and friends. Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mitzie (Lovell) Chapman; five children, Joseph (Denise) Chapman of Howland, Kenny (Andrea) Chapman, Cathy Chapman, Rich (Cyndi) Chapman and Melissa (Jimmy) Perline all of Cortland; nine grandchildren, Kelsie, Emily, Joey, Abbey, Jacob, Daniel, Samuel, Shailynn and Lucia and a sister, Frona Halasz of Murphysboro, TN He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Billy J. Chapman. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5-7 PM at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren. A celebration of Joe's life will follow at 7:00 PM. A private Interment will be at a later date according to his wishes.
